9 Fun Facts about the Cayman Islands

Writer's picture: DREAM AMAZING TRAVELDREAM AMAZING TRAVEL

The Cayman Islands are an idyllic island destination with tranquil turquoise seas and coral sand beaches. They have a very high rate of return visitation and a high standard of living. The three islands each have a different vibe, but all three islands are rich in history, culture, and nature.

1. You can start your vacation faster

Can’t wait to start your vacation? Grand Cayman is just a one-hour flight from Miami, and many US cities have nonstop flights. Once you’re there, most of the resorts are just a 15-20 minute drive from the airport. You can be on the beach in a jiffy.

2. Grand Cayman is the culinary capital of the Caribbean.

You'll find a wide range of options to keep your taste buds happy. Grand Cayman has over 200 places to eat, from food trucks to fine dining from a world-renowned chef.

3. The Mudslide cocktail was born in Grand Cayman.

Sometime in the 1970s, a guest ordered a White Russian which consists of vodka, Kahlua, and fresh cream. The bartender didn’t have any fresh cream and offered to substitute Bailey’s Irish Cream. The Mudslide was born. While there are different variations, the most popular is topped with cinnamon and a cherry with a shot of Kahlua down the straw.

4. You can go scuba diving at a different site every day for an entire year.

The Cayman Islands are a fantastic destination for scuba divers. All three islands (Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman) offer amazing scuba diving. There are 365 officially named dive sites between the three islands. You’ll find 80-degree water with 100 ft. visibility along with some legendary wreck dives. Two of them made Sport Diver’s list of the 50 best

5. You can pet and feed stingrays.

This is an incredible experience that I had a chance to do several years ago. It’s definitely a bucket-list experience for animal lovers. Rather than try to put into words how awesome it is, I’ll just share a video so you can see it for yourself.

6. There’s a big pirate festival every year.

What started as a week-long celebration has grown into seven weeks of festivities. The festival spans all three islands and includes party nights, costume contests, cultural and heritage competitions, music, and more.

7. You can see blue iguanas.

Grand Cayman Blue Iguanas are an endangered species found only on Grand Cayman. It is the largest native species and full-grown iguanas can weigh up to 22 lbs. They were almost driven to extinction, but thanks to efforts by wildlife conservation organizations and the government of the Cayman Islands, they are surviving.

8. There’s a beach with lots of starfish.

You can go snorkeling on a secluded stretch of beach that is speckled with lots of colorful starfish. You can pick up the starfish, but it’s important not to remove these beautiful creatures from the water.

9. You can go to Hell and send a postcard.

Yes, you read that correctly. The name Hell was inspired by the short, black, limestone formations that have a sinister look to them.
